Classic Homemade Lasagna Recipe

🧾 Ingredients

For the Meat Sauce:

  • 500g (1 lb) ground beef or veal
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 400g crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • A pinch of sugar
  • Optional: dried basil or oregano

For the Béchamel Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups warm milk
  • Pinch of nutmeg (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Other:

  • 8–10 lasagna pasta sheets (pre-cooked or oven-ready)
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

👨‍🍳 Instructions

1. Prepare the Meat Sauce:

  1. Heat olive oil in a pan and sauté onion and garlic until soft.
  2. Add ground meat and cook until browned.
  3. Stir in tomatoes and tomato paste. Season with salt, pepper, sugar, and herbs.
  4. Simmer for 20–30 minutes until thick.

2. Make the Béchamel:

  1. Melt butter in a saucepan and stir in flour.
  2. Gradually add milk while whisking constantly.
  3. Cook until thickened. Add salt, pepper, and nutmeg if desired.

3. Assemble the Lasagna:

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Spread a little béchamel in the bottom of a baking dish.
  3. Layer pasta sheets, meat sauce, béchamel, and mozzarella.
  4. Repeat layers. Finish with mozzarella and Parmesan on top.

4. Bake:

  • Cover with foil and bake for 30–35 minutes.
  • Remove foil and bake 10 more minutes until golden.
  • Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
